In "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," the title character (Chris Pine) works as a CIA analyst and stumbles on something big, evidence that a world-changing terrorist attack is coming. Jack presents his findings to his superior, William Harper (Kevin Costner), and is quickly promoted to field operative with an order to travel to Moscow to research his theory further.
In Moscow, Jack soon is attacked by a man working for the villain behind the terrorist plot, Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh), and surprised in Russia by wife Cathy (Kiera Knightley), who up until now had no idea he worked for the CIA. This is stressful enough but it gets worse when Jack's undercover partnership with Cherevin goes south putting him, wife Cathy and boss William all in danger.

I Have a Situation
Jack Ryan: "This is quarterback. I have a situation. Somebody tried to kill me."
CIA Contact: "You are breaking protocol… Quarterback?"
Jack Ryan: "Yeah"
CIA Contact: "Time's up!"
When Jack runs into trouble, he tries to call for help. Unfortunately, he doesn't quite understand all the details of being a CIA field agent and soon learns that phoning a friend isn't a magical fix to his problem.
You Sold This As An Office Job
William Harper: "You stick to the scheduled audit tomorrow, everything official, everything in public. You'll be fine. I need for you to be fine."
Jack Ryan: "You know you sold this as an office job."
William Harper: "You're not just an analyst anymore. You're operational now."
With good reason, Jack is a little afraid of what he will face in the field. William tries to give him a quick pep talk but perhaps the gun he also gives Jack will provide more reassurance.
Coordinated Plot for Terrorist Attack
William Harper: "Why don't you sit down. Now talk me through your very scary scenario. Keep in mind I don't have your PhD."
Jack Ryan: "I think there's a coordinated plot for terrorist attack. Tokyo, London, the United States, it's going to be a wipe out. We'll never see it coming."
William and Jack talk about what Jack has discovered in his analyst position within the CIA. He's stumbled on something that could change history and bringing it to his superior so someone can take action. Little does Jack know, that someone will be him.
Checking In
Embee: "You go and register. I'll help you upstairs with the bags."
Jack Ryan: "No, that's okay, I can get it from here."
Embee: "I'm supposed to check the room."
Jack Ryan: "Okay"
Hotel Employee: "Welcome, Mr. Ryan. Just your signature please."
Embee: "Mr. Cherevin hopes the room will be to your satisfaction. Ah, yes, and the view is second to none."
Jack Ryan: "Wow, that is magnificent!"
Jack checks into his hotel room in Moscow and is surprised at the luxurious suite waiting for him. Also in the surprising category: The fact that Embee is now trying to kill him and that he is unexpectedly good at defending himself.
This Is Geopolitics. It's Not Couples Therapy.
William Harper: "Jack, you've got another problem."
…
Jack Ryan: "What are you doing here?"
…
Jack Ryan: "You're not involving her in this."
Cathy: "You involved me in this by not telling me."
Jack Ryan: "You've gotta get her out of here. Send her home."
Cathy: "Well what are you going to tell Cherevin? That I'm homesick?"
Jack Ryan: "These are dangerous people, Cathy. You cannot be here."
Cathy: "If you told me who you really were…"
Jack Ryan: "I took an oath! I took an oath. I couldn't tell you unless we were married or you wouldn't marry me."
Cathy: "That's why you wanted to marry me so that you could tell somebody that you were in the CIA?"
Jack Ryan: "Of course not!"
Cathy: "You lied to me for three years and you were good at it. I think you actually enjoyed it."
Jack Ryan: [to William] "Can we have a minute here?"
William Harper: "No, you can't."
Cathy: "I would like to talk to Jack alone."
William Harper: "This is geopolitics. It's not couples therapy. Do I really have to remind you what's at stake here, Jack? There's a very real scenario here where we don't get out of this alive… any of us."
Jack is surprised to see that wife Cathy has followed him to Moscow and that she's learned the truth that he works for the CIA. While both would rather work this out in private, Jack's boss William reminds them what is really important in their current situation.
I Have to Go to Moscow
Jack Ryan: "I have to go to Moscow."
Cathy: "Why don't you want me to come?"
Jack Ryan: "Because I will be working the whole time."
When Jack tells wife Cathy that he needs to head to Moscow for work, she doesn't understand why she cannot accompany him. She of course has no idea that he works for the CIA and following him there would be extremely dangerous for all.
Is Work Okay?
Cathy: "Jack, Jack, is work okay?"
Jack: "Yeah…"
Cathy asks husband Jack about his day, which initially throws Jack off guard. See Cathy doesn't know that Jack doesn't have some normal job, unbeknownst to her, he's a secret CIA operative.
Partnerships Are Delicate
Viktor Cherevin: "Partnerships are delicate, Mr. Ryan. Sometimes they end violently."
Russian billionaire Viktor Cherevin gives Jack Ryan a coy threat in reminding him that sometimes even the best partnerships go south. Little does Jack know that Viktor intends on bringing this danger far closer to Jack's home than he ever imagined.
Perhaps You're Just Touchy
Viktor Cherevin: "You Americans like to think of yourself as direct but perhaps you are just rude."
Jack Ryan: "Perhaps you are just touchy."
Jack Ryan may be a bit green compared to most CIA field agents but when he is tested by Russian billionaire Viktor Cherevin, he doesn't let that inexperience or fear show one bit.
If You Find the Truth, Will You Believe It?
Jack Ryan: "What the hell is going on here?"
William Harper: "Sometimes the ones closest to us are the ones we should trust the least… If you find the truth, will you believe it?"
Jack is thoroughly confused by what is happening to him in life with his work and his personal life. But as William mentions, perhaps the truth is right under his nose, he just has to decide if he wants to believe it.
